There may be some bah humbugs milling around out there, but we sure aren’t one of them. We love this time of year. Bring on the glitter! Bring on the glue! The holidays are rife with opportunities to create things for the home and for those you love and that’s something we can get behind. And judging by the barren shelves at the area craft stores, many of you are out there crafting up a storm this holiday season!
To us, one of the best holiday traditions is the advent calendar. Especially in a household of little ones, counting down to Christmas can feel like an eternity and the advent calendar really comes in handy as a way to bolster excitement with small gifts and encourage lots of fun holiday celebrations for the 24 days leading up to Christmas. We developed some cute advent ideas for our adult Advent Calendar workshop held this past week and are pleased to say that everything went over really well with the Moms who joined us to make their own calendars to bring home to their own families. We had two designs attendees picked from-a stamped muslin bag or a little white chinese food type box. Both can be strung up with clothespins and red and white baker’s twine for a super cute display on the mantle or a chosen wall in your home. We offered lots of fun fillers for the containers so that each person could go home ready and not need to give the advent another thought-a definite bonus as the holidaze and craziness sets in!
You may have your own tradition about what should go inside the daily advent holder…for some people it’s a treat like a gold coin or a Hershey’s kiss, for others it’s a quarter or other small change, and for some it’s a small, store bought trinket. At the Creative Capsule, one of our favorite ideas is to fill some of the advent spots with activities the whole family can do together. What better way to feel the spirit of the season than to actively engage in it? Here are a couple of the ideas we used in our advent workshop. Feel free to use these in any of the blank spaces you might still need to fill on your own family’s advent calendar. Have fun waiting for Santa Claus to come!
Idea #1: Fill the advent pocket with piece of bubble gum and include the following instructions:
Let’s have a family bubble blowing contest! Each players gets a piece of gum. Chew the gum for 60 seconds and then attempt to blow the biggest bubble. Make sure a refers is standing by to call out the winner!
Idea #2: Fill the advent pocket with a shiny penny and include the following instructions:
Let’s get back to basics and play the old-fashioned game PENNY PENNY. Directions: All players form a circle and choose the oldest person to be “it” first. The person who is “it” closes his/her eyes while the others pass as penny around the circle. One person hides the penny behind his/her back then all the other players put their hands behind their backs, too. The player who is “it” is allowed two guesses as to who has the penny. If “it” guesses correctly, they exchange places and a new person is “it”. Have fun!
